[Clean your way to glowing skin]
We scrub, we squeeze, sometimes we clean, some times we don’t. While washing your face sounds like no-brainer, a surprising number of people get it wrong. Here’s what you need to know.
What’s the big deal?
“The skin needs to be gently cleansed to remove excess debris like make-up and sunscreen without stripping the skin of its natural moisturizers,” says dermatologist.
Can you over-cleanse?
Yes. Over-cleansing, especially with products containing detergent (e.g. foaming ones), can strip lipids, which means the skin’s barrier function is reduced and can no longer adequately protect itself. This can cause damage and lead to problems such as irritation, breakouts and dermatitis.
How should skin feel afterwards?
Soft and clean, without feeling tight or dry. If skin feels tight, you’re cleansing too much. Rule #1, cleanse no more than twice a day.
Do I need make-up remover?
Not necessarily. A good gentle cleanser should be able to clean you skin and remove make-up, including mascara and eyeliner. E.g. dermalogica special cleansing gel.
Moisturize Everyday?
With combination skin?
Easy. Only apply moisturizer on the dry areas of your face.
Why do we need it at all?
“Moisturizer fills in gaps between the cells in the skin’s outer layer, helping to proctect against irritation and environmental toxins, filling these gaps produces a compact, smooth outer surface that reflects light more effectively and makes skin look better.”
Moisturizing aids exfoliation
Skin naturally renews itself 28 days. Poor hydration leads to sluggish exfoliation, producing microscopic clumping of cells in the outer layer. This can be seen and felt as dry, rough, flaky skin.
Give bad skin the brush off!
The best way to exfoliate the skin is chemically (with ingredients) not mechanically. Which is more gentler and more efficient way to get a really deep clean. The ingredients get right into the pores and follicles of the skin, removing both blackheads and whiteheads.
Will exfoliation improve my complexion?
Yes. A skin that exfoliates effectively is smooth, radiant and suffers less from acne and breakouts. However, it’s important not to overdo it – twice a week is generally enough.
What about micro-dermabrasion?
“cystic-acned skin benefits from micro-dermabrasion due to its fantastic exfoliation process,” says volunteer of clinic.
